Text statistics

Count characters (with and without spaces), UTF-8 bytes, words, Chinese characters, lines and paragraphs, find the longest line and word, plus a top-10 character frequency and reading time estimate.

Runs in your browserEvery computation happens in your browser — your data never leaves this device.

Statistics

Words = latin words + Chinese characters (one per character); characters are counted by Unicode code point.

What this tool does

  • Check a draft before you hand it in: characters with and without spaces, UTF-8 bytes, words, Chinese characters, lines and paragraphs in one view.
  • Hit a strict limit for a title, abstract or product description — mixed Chinese/English copy is miscounted by word count alone, and here Chinese characters count individually.
  • Spot the longest line and the longest word, and skim the top-10 character frequency to see whether one character is being overused.
  • Estimate reading time to decide whether a piece is a one-minute skim or needs a longer slot.

Input

Output

Characters (with spaces): 39
Characters (no spaces): 35
Bytes (UTF-8): 97
Words: 27
Chinese characters: 26
Lines: 4
Paragraphs: 2
Average word length: 1.19
Longest line: UniKit 是在线工具箱。
Longest word: UniKit
Reading time: Under 1 minute

Words = 26 Chinese characters + 1 latin word (UniKit) = 27. Lines is 4 because the blank line counts as a line, while paragraphs is 2.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the word count so much higher than I expected?

Because Chinese is counted per character: every Chinese character is one "word". A 100-character Chinese paragraph therefore reports at least 100 words. The rule keeps the count predictable for mixed Chinese and English text.

Why do the character count and the byte count differ so much?

Characters are counted as Unicode code points (an emoji counts as one) while bytes are the UTF-8 length. A Chinese character takes 3 bytes and an emoji usually 4, so the byte count grows well beyond the character count as soon as CJK text or emoji appear.

How are lines and paragraphs counted?

Lines are split on \n, \r\n and \r, so blank lines count too; paragraphs are separated by blank lines and whitespace-only paragraphs are ignored. That is why the example above reports 4 lines but 2 paragraphs.

Do punctuation and spaces count as characters?

"Characters (with spaces)" includes everything; "characters (no spaces)" only removes whitespace (spaces, newlines, tabs) and still counts punctuation. The top-10 frequency list ignores whitespace and punctuation and is case-insensitive.

Is my text uploaded?

No. The statistics are computed entirely in your browser, your input never leaves the device and the tool works offline.
