What this tool does

  • While debugging a terminal, serial link or binary protocol, map the `0x0A`, `^J` and `LF` you just saw onto one table and confirm whether it is a line feed, a carriage return or something else.
  • Check code points while writing regexes or parsers: `0` is 48, `A` is 65, `a` is 97, and the case gap is 32.
  • Search in plain language instead of abbreviations — type “line feed” to land on 10, or “delete” to land on 127.
  • When dealing with legacy Latin-1 data, switch on the 128–255 extension to see the characters and HTML entities for the high bytes.

Example

Input

65

Output

Decimal 65 · Hex 0x41 · Octal 0101 · Binary 01000001 · Character A · HTML entity A · Category Uppercase letter · Description Uppercase letter A

Octal is always written as a leading zero plus three digits (0101) and binary is padded to eight bits; control characters have no HTML entity, so the entity column for decimal 10 is empty.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the HTML entity empty for decimal 10?

Because 10 is a control character (line feed) and has no character-reference form in HTML. The entity column only fills in for printable characters (32–126) as `&#code;`. For control characters you get the abbreviation (LF), the caret notation (^J) and the description instead.

Which input formats does the search box understand?

Decimal `65`, hex `0x41`, binary `0b1000001` or the eight-digit form `01000001`, octal `0101`, a single character `A`, an abbreviation like `DEL`, caret notation `^A`, and plain-language descriptions such as `line feed` or `换行`. Anything else falls back to a fuzzy contains-match against abbreviations, descriptions and category names.

What is the 128–255 extension?

It is the upper half of Latin-1 (ISO-8859-1); enabling it grows the table from 128 to 256 rows. Those code points are not ASCII, and modern text is different again: UTF-8 encodes one Chinese character in three bytes, so multi-byte text does not map onto these single-byte code points.

Is DEL a control character or a printable one?

Control. Code point 127 is Delete, and although it sits just past the printable range the tool treats 32 (space) as printable and 127 as a control character, so the “Printable only” filter excludes it.

Where do space, tab and newline land?

Code points 9 (TAB), 10 (LF), 11 (VT), 12 (FF), 13 (CR) and 32 (space) are grouped into their own “Whitespace” category so the whitespace filter shows them all at once; each still carries its own abbreviation and caret notation.
