Syllable count

Estimate English syllable counts with rules (vowel groups, silent final e, consonant + le), with a syllable division hint per word, the total and average syllables per word, a multi-syllable word list and a separate count for Chinese characters.

Runs in your browserEvery computation happens in your browser — your data never leaves this device.

Text to count

These are rule-based estimates (vowel groups, silent final e, consonant + le), not a pronunciation dictionary lookup; Chinese characters are counted separately as one syllable each, which is a different convention from English syllables.

Summary

Type some text and it is counted immediately.

What this tool does

  • Check the rhythm of English copy: a high average syllables-per-word usually means long words and heavier reading.
  • Lay out syllables for a poem, a rap line or a slogan — each word comes with a division hint so you can match the beat.
  • Explain in class why the is one syllable while people is two: the division hint splits peo-ple for you.
  • Count mixed Chinese and English text: syllables and Chinese characters are reported in separate columns instead of being mixed together.

Example

Input

The beautiful computer works perfectly.

Output

5 English words · 11 syllables · 2.2 syllables per word · the=1, beautiful=3 (beau-ti-ful), computer=3 (com-pu-ter), works=1, perfectly=3

The silent final e in "the" is not counted, and there are no Chinese characters, so the combined count is 11 as well.

Frequently asked questions

How are syllables counted, and how accurate is it?

With the usual classroom heuristics: a run of vowels is one syllable, a silent final e is skipped, a consonant + le ending forms its own syllable, and consonants between two vowel groups are assigned by position. Common words such as the, people, business and queue come out right, while proper nouns, loanwords and abbreviations drift; words the rules get wrong (business, science, idea and friends) ship with a corrected division.

Why are Chinese characters counted separately?

In Mandarin one character is normally one syllable, so the tool reports a dedicated Chinese character count and a combined figure. Treat the combined number as a length estimate only — it uses a different convention from English syllables, which is why the two are never averaged together.

When does y count as a vowel?

A leading y is treated as a consonant (yes has one syllable), while a y that is not first and does not follow a vowel counts as a vowel: happy splits into hap-py for two syllables, and myth or fly stay at one.

Why is there a 2000 word limit?

Every word runs through the rules and gets a division hint, so tens of thousands of words would visibly stall the page. Over the limit the tool says so instead of freezing; for very long documents, count a few sections and add the syllable totals together.

What happens with hyphens and apostrophes?

Only Latin letters take part in the syllable rules, while hyphens and apostrophes stay in the displayed word. So don’t counts as one syllable and mother-in-law produces four hints, without changing the word itself.
