Random word generator

Draw random words from a built-in list of 550 English and 300 Chinese common words, with controls for word count, length, first letter and case style — handy for usernames, project codenames and passphrases.

Runs in your browserEvery computation happens in your browser — your data never leaves this device.

Settings

The word list ships with the page and randomness comes from the browser crypto.getRandomValues API — everything runs offline.

Append random digitsDigit count depends on the use case: words 2, username 2, codename 3, passphrase 4
1 – 20

Result

Rejection sampling keeps every word equally likely, and a word is never reused while the pool is large enough.

Set the options and press Generate — the random words appear here.

What this tool does

  • Grab a few placeholder words for prototypes or fixtures: English, 4–6 letters, kebab-case, three of them, straight into your mock data.
  • Name an account: the username mode builds two lowercase words plus two digits — easier to remember than keyboard mashing and unlikely to collide with a dictionary word.
  • Codename a project: PascalCase short-word combos are far easier to say in standups than v1.3.2-rc4.
  • Build a passphrase: pick six words with four appended digits and read the entropy estimate to judge the strength.

Example

Input

Word list: English; 3 words; length 4–6; first letter s; kebab-case; no digits

Output

storm-silver-sunny

Which words you get is decided by the random source, so every Generate gives a different result — this is a real possible output where all three words are 4–6 letters and start with s.

Frequently asked questions

How big is the word list, and are the words obscure?

There are 550 English and 300 Chinese common words, all everyday vocabulary that is easy to read and spell — no rare terms or proper nouns. The list ships with the page, so nothing is fetched.

Is the randomness trustworthy?

Numbers come from the browser crypto.getRandomValues API, which is a cryptographically secure generator, and indices are drawn with rejection sampling so no word is favoured by a modulo bias.

Why do I get "no word matches the filters"?

The first-letter and length filters apply together, and the combination can empty the pool — for example no English word in the list is 15 letters or longer. Relax the length range and it works again.

How is the entropy estimate computed?

It is words × log2(pool size), i.e. the number of possibilities raised to the word count, plus log2(10) per appended digit. Treat it as an upper bound; real strength also depends on the random source.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The word list and the randomness are local, the page makes no requests, and a refresh clears the result — there is no server-side record.
