What this tool does

  • Add pinyin to Chinese names, places or product names for documentation, business cards and voice-over scripts.
  • Check polyphonic characters: turn on “list every reading” to see whether 重庆 is chóngqìng and how 银行 should be read.
  • Generate initials — turn a list of Chinese names into “zhang san” or “zs” for sorting, abbreviations and lookup keys.
  • Convert mixed Chinese/English copy to toned pinyin while Latin words, digits, punctuation and emoji stay exactly as they were.

Example

Input

重庆火锅,Hello 世界! (tone marks + polyphonic mode)

Output

chóng/zhòng qìng huǒ guō,Hello shì jiè!; statistics: 6 Chinese characters, 8 other characters, 1 polyphonic character

In 重庆 the character 重 is read chóng, so polyphonic mode writes chóng/zhòng with the context reading first.

Frequently asked questions

How are polyphonic readings decided?

The default reading comes from pinyin-pro’s phrase dictionary, which uses the surrounding context: 重 is chóng in 重庆 but zhòng in 重要. Switching on the polyphonic option also lists every reading of the character, with the context reading first.

Can I convert pinyin back to Chinese characters?

Not here. One syllable usually maps to dozens of characters (shi alone has dozens), so a context-free candidate list is mostly noise and easily misleading — use an IME or a dictionary that knows about words instead.

What happens to Latin text and punctuation?

Anything that is not a Chinese character is kept as-is: English words, digits, punctuation, emoji and spaces are never split or rewritten. Only the Chinese runs are joined with the separator you choose, so “Hello 世界!” becomes “Hello shì jiè!”.

Tone marks or tone numbers?

Tone marks are the typographic form (hàn, yǔ) used in teaching and typesetting; tone numbers (han4, yu3) suit input methods, search and data processing. Neutral tones get no number, so 的 is simply de.

How much text can I convert at once?

Up to 2000 characters per conversion, and longer input is rejected with a message. The character-by-character table renders the first 500 Chinese characters to keep the page responsive; the pinyin output itself is not limited by that.
