Salary comparison calculator

Put two (up to four) job offers on the same footing: annual, monthly, nominal hourly and an effective hourly rate that also counts commuting, then say which one really pays more.

Offers to compare

Definitions: nominal hourly = annual pay ÷ (hours per week × working weeks), 40 × 52 = 2080 hours a year by default; the effective hourly rate also charges your commuting time to the job. Working days are counted at five per week and reduced by paid leave.

What this tool does

  • Two offers on the table? Do not stop at the salary line — enter weekly hours and commuting time and see which one actually pays more per hour of your life.
  • Judge a promotion that pays more but demands more: a 15% raise for ten extra hours a week can lower your effective rate.
  • Price remote work: saving ten commute hours a week is a measurable raise in effective hourly terms.
  • Compare total packages on one basis when employers pay 13 or 16 months, or run alternating five- and six-day weeks.

Example

Input

Offer A: 360000 CNY a year, 40 hours a week over 52 weeks, 5 commute hours a week, 15 days paid leave. Offer B: 420000 CNY a year, 50 hours a week, 10 commute hours, 10 days paid leave

Output

Offer A wins: effective rate 153.85 CNY (nominal 173.08 CNY, 2080 work hours and 260 commute hours a year, commute share 11.1%, 245 working days). Offer B: effective rate 134.62 CNY (nominal 161.54 CNY, 2600 work hours and 520 commute hours, commute share 16.7%). B pays 60,000.00 CNY more a year but 19.23 CNY less per effective hour

Offer B is 60,000 CNY richer on paper, yet ten extra working hours plus five extra commuting hours a week leave it behind per hour — exactly the trap of comparing salaries alone.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the nominal and effective hourly rate?

The nominal rate simply divides annual pay by annual working hours. The effective rate also charges your weekly commuting time to the job. Commuting earns nothing but consumes real time, so the effective rate is closer to “what this job actually pays me per hour”.

What hours should I enter?

Enter the hours you really put in, including habitual overtime and weekend shifts. The default is 40 hours a week × 52 weeks = 2080 hours a year, the full-time employee basis. If your employer runs alternating weeks or a 10-to-10 culture, use the real numbers or the comparison is meaningless.

Why does paid leave matter?

It feeds the working-days figure — how many days you actually have to show up. More paid leave means a higher income per working day for the same salary. Entering 0 means no paid leave, and the tool assumes 52 weeks × 5 days = 260 working days.

Why is the higher salary not the recommended offer?

Because the recommendation is based on the effective hourly rate, not the headline number. A bigger salary with longer hours and a worse commute can pay less per unit of time. Which offer to take is still your call — some people trade time for money, others value time itself; the tool only quantifies the gap.

How accurate is the result?

The arithmetic is deterministic — only division and rounding — so accuracy depends entirely on how honest your inputs are. Income tax, social contributions, housing funds and equity are out of scope, so keep them in mind when comparing across cities or tax systems.
