Ideal weight calculator

Compute ideal body weight with four classic formulas (Devine 1974, Robinson 1983, Miller 1983, Hamwi 1964) from height and sex, alongside the healthy range implied by the WHO normal BMI band of 18.5–24.9, in both kilograms and pounds.

Height and sex

All four formulas were derived for drug dosing and depend on height alone; the healthy range comes from the WHO BMI band, which answers a different question.

Result

Enter your height, pick a sex, then press “Calculate ideal weight”.

What this tool does

  • Set a realistic reference point before a cut or a bulk — a range from four classic formulas beats a single target number.
  • Clinical and pharmacy workflows still use the Devine formula for ideal body weight (some drugs are dosed against IBW); here you can see all four side by side.
  • Decide whether to keep losing weight by comparing your current weight with the healthy range implied by a BMI of 18.5–24.9.
  • Write a fitness or health plan with a target band instead of one misleading number.

Example

Input

Male, height 180 cm

Output

10.87 inches over 5 ft; Devine 75.0 kg, Robinson 72.6 kg, Miller 71.5 kg, Hamwi 77.3 kg, average 74.1 kg (163.4 lb); healthy range 59.9–80.7 kg

The spread across formulas reaches about 6 kg at this height, which is exactly why a single “ideal weight” number is misleading.

Frequently asked questions

Why do the four formulas disagree?

They are regressions fitted on different cohorts in different decades. Devine and Robinson run conservative, Miller comes out light for tall people, and Hamwi runs heavy. For a 180 cm man the spread is about 6 kg, so treat the range — not any single number — as the answer.

What is the difference between ideal weight and the healthy range?

Ideal body weight is a height-derived reference number originally intended for drug dosing. The healthy range converts the WHO normal BMI band (18.5–24.9) back into kilograms for your height. The range is wider and is the better target for most people.

What happens below 5 ft (152.4 cm)?

The formulas take “inches over 5 ft” as their input, so below that mark the term goes negative and the result is extrapolated. That is outside the validated range for adults; rely on the BMI healthy range instead.

Do these numbers work for athletes or pregnancy?

No. The formulas ignore muscle mass, body fat and age, and they do not apply during pregnancy. A well-trained lifter can sit above the formula weight and still be healthy — judge that with body fat and circumference instead.

Does this tool send my data anywhere?

No. Every calculation runs locally in the browser and the page makes no network requests.
