Parameters

Enter the amount in EUR; the arithmetic runs on integer cents. Rates are default reference values (as of 2026-10): the EU only requires a standard rate of at least 15%, and each member state sets its own rates and scope.

What this tool does

  • Quote an EU customer: enter the net amount and pick the country to see the gross price and the VAT amount, both ready for the quote.
  • Split a tax-inclusive price: bookkeeping, refunds and invoicing all need the VAT separated, and the gross → net direction does it in one step.
  • Compare member states: see what a €100 item costs gross in Germany, France, Hungary and Luxembourg on a single table.
  • Check which band applies: each country expands into its standard and reduced rates so you can match the rate to the product category.

Example

Input

Amount EUR 100, member state Germany (DE), direction net → gross, rounding to the nearest cent

Output

Standard rate 19%, net €100.00, VAT €19.00, gross €119.00; the German 7% reduced band gives €107.00

The EU only requires a standard rate of at least 15%; each member state sets its own rates and scope, with food, books and medicine commonly in the reduced band.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get the VAT out of a gross price?

VAT = gross × rate ÷ (100 + rate) and net = gross − VAT. At 19% on a €119 gross amount: 119 × 19 ÷ 119 = €19 of VAT and €100 net.

Why is there a "round the VAT down" option?

Some countries’ invoicing rules allow or require the VAT on each transaction to be rounded down to the smallest currency unit so you never over-collect. Switching to down moves the VAT by one cent and adjusts the net and gross accordingly.

Which goods qualify for a reduced rate?

Each member state picks from the list the EU directive allows: commonly food, drinking water, medicine, books and newspapers, passenger transport, hotel accommodation and cultural event tickets. The same product can sit in different bands in different countries, so check the national list.

Is VAT due on cross-border B2B sales?

Usually not. Intra-EU B2B services fall under the reverse charge, so the buyer accounts for the VAT in its own country; cross-border B2B supplies of goods are generally zero-rated but still require a VIES check and reporting. B2C sales follow the OSS/IOSS rules.

Can these rates go stale?

Yes. They are default reference values (as of 2026-10) and member states adjust rates fairly often. Before a firm quote or a filing, confirm the current rate on the European Commission site or the national tax authority page.
