Runs in your browserEvery computation happens in your browser — your data never leaves this device.

Parameters

Enter the amount in USD; the arithmetic runs on integer cents. The table below holds sample rates (as of 2026-10): the real rate depends on the state, county, city and your nexus, and can differ between ZIP codes in the same state.

Sample rate table (editable)

State rates come from state law and the local figure is only an average — counties, cities and special districts add their own. Edit the numbers to model your own case.

StateState rate (%)Local avg (%)Combined (%)Note
CA8.857.25% state rate; district taxes vary by county and some areas add another layer.
NY8.534% state rate; New York City combines to about 8.875%.
TX8.26.25% state rate with a 2% local cap that most areas approach.
FL7.056% state rate; county surtaxes differ and a few counties add more.
WA9.16.5% state rate with relatively high local taxes, over 10% in places.
IL8.856.25% state rate; Chicago and some other areas combine much higher.
NV8.246.85% state rate with county-level add-ons.
AZ8.45.6% state rate; some cities levy their own tax.
CO7.82.9% state rate, but local and special-district taxes are usually high.
HI4.54% state rate plus a 0.5% county surcharge.
AK1.8Alaska has no state sales tax, but local governments may levy one.
OR0Oregon has no sales tax, only a few targeted levies.
MT0Montana has no sales tax; a few resort areas have local taxes.
NH0New Hampshire has no sales tax.

What this tool does

  • Add sales tax to a US order: enter the amount, pick the state, and see the tax and gross total without doing the arithmetic by hand.
  • Reverse a tax-inclusive price: switch to gross → net to split a listed price into the net amount and the tax for bookkeeping or refunds.
  • Compare states: see what the same order costs in California, New York, Texas and Oregon before deciding whether pricing needs to vary by state.
  • Check a marketplace payout: type the marketplace’s rate into the table and recompute to confirm the tax it withheld is right.

Example

Input

Amount USD 100, state California (CA), direction net → gross

Output

Combined rate 8.85%, net $100.00, sales tax $8.85, gross $108.85, tax share of gross 8.13%

California’s combined rate is the 7.25% state rate plus a 1.6% average local rate. Real rates stack county, city and special-district taxes, so two ZIPs in the same state can differ.

Frequently asked questions

Why do Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire and Delaware show 0%?

Those four states have no state-level sales tax, so ordinary goods are usually untaxed (Delaware levies a gross receipts tax instead, Montana has local taxes in a few resort areas, and New Hampshire taxes meals and lodging). Alaska also has no state tax but allows local ones, which is why the table lists a 1.8% local average there.

Where do the combined rates come from?

A combined rate is the state rate plus an average of local rates. In reality counties, cities and special districts each legislate their own add-ons, so rates differ between ZIP codes within a state. This table holds sample reference values (as of 2026-10) for estimating and comparing only.

Do I actually have to collect sales tax?

It depends on nexus. Physical presence — an office, warehouse or employee — usually triggers collection, and most states also have an economic nexus threshold for remote sellers (USD 500,000 of sales in California, for example). Confirm thresholds and registration with a tax adviser.

How does the gross → net direction work?

Tax = gross × rate ÷ (100 + rate) and net = gross − tax. Re-running the net through the forward calculation returns the same gross to the cent, because everything is rounded to whole cents.

Do SaaS, digital goods or clothing use the same rate?

No. Many states tax digital goods, SaaS, food, clothing and medicine differently, and some exempt clothing below a threshold. This tool estimates general tangible goods — check the state DOR for special categories.
