Typing speed test
Measure your typing speed in the browser: graded passages with a 15/30/60 second timer, live WPM, CPM, accuracy and net speed, plus per-character highlighting of every mistake.

What this tool does
- Get a baseline WPM before a new job or after switching keyboards, so you can compare with colleagues objectively.
- Drill blind typing with repeated 15 second runs — short runs show your variance, long runs show your steady level.
- Compare real speed across keyboards: the same passage often yields different accuracy on a mechanical versus a membrane board.
- Find your weak spot: when accuracy drops below 95%, slow down, fix the mistakes and only then chase speed.
Example
Input
Difficulty easy, type the first 72 character passage correctly within 60 seconds
Output
WPM (gross) 14.4, net WPM 14.4, CPM 72, accuracy 100.00%, 72 characters typed, progress 100%, no mistakes
WPM = correct characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes, so 72 ÷ 5 = 14.4. Six mistakes would cost another 6 WPM from the net figure.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between WPM and CPM?
WPM treats five characters as one "word", which is the convention in English typing communities; CPM counts correct characters per minute and reads more naturally for CJK text or code. Both derive from the same correct-character count, so CPM is always five times WPM.
Should I care more about accuracy or speed?
Accuracy first. The usual guidance is to keep accuracy above 95% before adding speed, because fixing a mistake costs far more time than typing a little slower. The tool reports gross and net speed side by side, and the gap between them is exactly what your mistakes cost.
Why do two runs on the same text differ so much?
Short 15 second runs are dominated by your starting state and swing widely, and capitals, punctuation and digits in a passage change the picture too. For a trustworthy number use 60 seconds, a fixed difficulty, and take the middle of several runs.
Is anything I type stored or uploaded?
No. The passages are built in, the statistics are computed in memory and shown, the page makes no requests, and a refresh clears everything.
