Today in history
Look up a date in a built-in sample event table: pick any day (with leap-year validation) to see space missions, inventions, wars and birthdays — clearly labelled as sample data.
Runs in your browserEvery computation happens in your browser — your data never leaves this device.
Events on this day
Built-in sample data: a short hand-curated list of about 30 well-known events, not a complete history database and not fetched online.
Events on this day
Pick a date and press “Look up this day” to see the entries in the built-in sample table.
What this tool does
- Writing a social post, newsletter or school bulletin: check what happened on today’s date faster than searching for it.
- A gentle history lesson for children — look up their birthday and see what else happened that day.
- Grab a few same-day entries as an opening for a talk or slide deck; titles are available in both Chinese and English.
- Validate a date quickly: leap-day 29 February or 31 April both give an immediate answer.
Example
Input
Date 2026-07-20
Output
2 entries: 1969 Apollo 11 lands on the Moon (Space), 1976 Viking 1 lands on Mars (Space)
The built-in table holds about 30 events only. A day without data (say 15 March) says so explicitly instead of inventing an entry.
Frequently asked questions
Where does the history data come from?
From a sample table baked into the tool: about 30 well-known events with an unambiguous year and date (the Moon landing, the telephone patent, the first Nobel Prizes and so on), each with a Chinese and English title. It is not a complete history database and the page fetches nothing.
Why are so many dates empty?
Because the sample table is deliberately small. When a day has no entry the tool says so instead of padding the page with filler, so you never mistake the sample data for an authoritative source.
Which date formats are accepted?
Use the date picker, or type YYYY-MM-DD, or just MM-DD for “this day every year”. Month and day lengths are validated, so 30 February or 29 February in a non-leap year are rejected.
Does it read my system clock?
The page reads “today” once to prefill the picker; the pure logic module never touches the clock — the date is always passed in, which keeps unit tests reproducible.
Does it work offline?
Yes. The event table, the validation and the rendering all run in the browser and the page makes no requests.
