- Reconcile before you book it: enter the amount charged and see what actually lands after 2.9% + $0.30 instead of recording the gross.
- Price in cross-border payments: international cards add about 1.5% and currency conversion about 1%, which moves the effective rate a lot — one tick shows the difference.
- Work out the price: need $100 net? Enter the target and get the amount you have to charge.
- Audit a statement: replace the defaults with your own contracted rates and check line by line whether the fees match.
Example
Input
Amount charged $100.00, base rate 2.9% + $0.30, international card surcharge 1.5%, currency conversion surcharge 1%, other fixed fee $0.00, target net $5.00
Output
Base processing fee $2.90, international surcharge $1.50, conversion surcharge $1.00, fixed fee $0.30, total fees $5.70, effective rate 5.70%; net amount $94.30; break-even amount $0.31, amount needed for the $5.00 target $5.60
Each fee rounds to the cent separately, so the effective rate is not exactly the sum of the rates. On small charges the $0.30 fixed fee dominates.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Stripe rate 2.9% + 30¢?
That is the default for US accounts on dollar cards, but Stripe prices per country, currency and product — European cards and non-US accounts differ. The defaults here were compiled in 2026-10 and are not real time, so edit them to match your account.
What are the international card and conversion surcharges?
Cards issued outside your country typically add about 1.5%, and when the charge currency differs from your settlement currency Stripe adds about 1% for conversion. Both can apply to the same payment, pushing the effective rate above 5%. Both fields are editable — use the numbers on your statement.
How do I use the solved amount?
It is the charge that leaves exactly your target net, so treat it as a lower bound. Because each fee rounds to the cent the net is not strictly monotonic; the tool verifies cent by cent around the analytic answer and takes the smallest workable value. Round up when you invoice.
Why is the fee share so high on small charges?
The $0.30 fixed fee does not scale with the amount. On a $1 charge it alone is 30%, and with the 2.9% percentage fee the effective rate passes 30%; larger charges dilute the fixed part.
Is my input uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything is computed locally in your browser, no request is sent, and a refresh clears the page.
