Bill split calculator

Split a bill exactly: share it equally or by custom weights, add tax, service charge and tip, then distribute the leftover cents with a remainder strategy — with a per-person breakdown and a totals check.

Bill details

Everything is computed in integer cents: tax and service charge apply to the subtotal, the tip base can be the subtotal or the taxed total, and leftover cents go to whoever the chosen strategy picks.

What this tool does

  • Split a restaurant bill without arguing over the last cent: enter the subtotal, tax, service charge and tip, and read off what each person owes.
  • Charge people by how much they consumed — write weights such as “1, 2, 3” so the bigger spenders pay more, tax and tip included.
  • Reconcile the bill with the built-in totals check: the per-person amounts must add up to the bill total, and the page shows both numbers side by side.
  • Produce a breakdown for expenses: copy each person’s subtotal, tax, service charge, tip and total into your spreadsheet.

Example

Input

Subtotal 100 yuan, tax 6%, service charge 10%, tip 15% (on the subtotal), split equally between 4 people

Output

Tax 6.00 yuan, service 10.00 yuan, tip 15.00 yuan, total 131.00 yuan; each person owes 32.75 yuan and the totals check passes

The tip is 15% of the 100 yuan subtotal. Switching the tip base to “subtotal + tax + service” raises the tip to 17.40 yuan and the total to 133.40 yuan.

Frequently asked questions

How are the leftover cents assigned?

Totals rarely divide evenly into whole cents. By default the tool uses the largest remainder method: everyone gets floor(total × weight / Σweights), then the leftover cents go one at a time to the largest fractional parts (ties go to the earlier person). You can instead let the first people or the last people pay the extra cent — either way the per-person amounts add up to the bill total.

Should the tip be calculated before or after tax?

Both are common: North American restaurants usually tip on the pre-tax amount, while some situations tip on the taxed total. The tip base selector offers “subtotal only” and “subtotal + tax + service”, and the tip amount and total update immediately so you can compare.

How do I enter a weighted split?

Switch the split method to “Split by weight” and enter the weights: 1, 1, 2 means the first two of three people take one share each and the third takes two. You can also name them, e.g. “Ann:2, Ben:1”. Only the ratios matter, so 2 and 4 gives the same result as 1 and 2.

Can the per-person amounts fail to match the total?

No. Each component (subtotal, tax, service charge, tip) is distributed separately with the largest remainder method, so every component sums exactly to its own total and the per-person amounts therefore sum to the bill total. The totals check row shows both figures for you to verify.

Is the arithmetic exact?

Every amount is handled in integer cents, and inputs accept two decimals (grouping commas like 1,234.56 are fine too). Tax, service charge and tip are rounded to the cent before being split, so you never see floating point artefacts such as 0.30000000000000004.
