What this tool does

  • Choose a plan with numbers: switch between Basic, Shopify, Grow and Advanced and see what the same order pays out under each.
  • See the real margin: the monthly plan fee and app charges sit alongside the processing fee, so the total is not just 2.9%.
  • Price in card types and gateways: Amex and international cards add a surcharge, and a third-party gateway adds another layer — one click shows the effect.
  • Solve backwards from a target: get the minimum price for a net profit goal, or work out how many orders a month it takes to absorb the plan fee.

Example

Input

Price $100.00, Basic plan 2.9% + $0.30, standard domestic card (no surcharge), $39.00 monthly fee spread over 100 orders, product cost $40.00, your shipping $5.00, target net profit $20.00

Output

Order total $100.00; processing fee $3.20, plan fee share $0.39, total fees $3.59, effective rate 3.59%; net proceeds $96.41, total cost $48.59, net profit $51.41, margin 51.41%; break-even price $47.05, price needed for the $20.00 target $67.65

Processing fees apply to price plus buyer-paid shipping, and the plan fee share is the monthly fee divided by the orders in the month (rounded up) — more orders means a smaller share each.

Frequently asked questions

What separates Basic, Shopify, Grow and Advanced?

The tiers trade a lower Shopify Payments rate for a higher monthly fee, so upgrading pays off once volume grows. The rates and monthly fees here are 2026-10 reference defaults (not real time) — edit them to match your plan and region.

Why do Amex and international cards add a surcharge?

Shopify Payments charges more for some card types: about +1% for Amex and +1.5% for international cards. Both are editable fields pre-filled from the public fee pages when you pick a card type, and you can override them afterwards.

How is a third-party gateway handled?

If you use a gateway other than Shopify Payments, Shopify adds its own fee on top (2% on Basic, 1% on Shopify, 0.6% on Grow, 0.5% on Advanced). Tick "Using a third-party gateway" and that rate is added to the total.

Should the monthly fee be spread over orders?

Yes, otherwise you underestimate the real cost. The tool divides the monthly fee by your orders per month and rounds up; enter 0 orders to skip the share. Raise the order count to find the volume where upgrading becomes worthwhile.

Can I use the solved price as-is?

It is the lower bound — the cheapest price that still meets the profit target. The tool verifies cent by cent around the analytic solution and takes the smallest workable value, but keeping 5–10% of headroom is still wise when card surcharges and plan fees move.
