What this tool does
- Roll call in class, a lucky draw at a party or splitting people into teams: paste the whole list, one name per line or separated by commas.
- When odds should not be equal, give candidates weights — "First prize,1" against "Try again,6" makes the scarce prize much harder to hit.
- For multi-round draws enable "remove winners from the list" so nobody wins twice, with a timestamped history of every draw.
- Need a full random ordering instead of one pick? "Shuffle all" is better for speaking order or seating arrangements.
Example
Input
Alice,3 Bob, Charlie
Output
Alice (weight 3) · Bob (weight 1) · Charlie (weight 1)
The first line parses as "name, weight" with weight 3; the second line splits on the separator into two candidates that default to weight 1, giving a three-item pool.
Frequently asked questions
How are weights parsed?
If a line ends with "name, number" or "name number" it is read as a weighted entry, and decimals are allowed. Otherwise the line splits on commas, semicolons and Chinese punctuation into equal-weight candidates. A missing weight means 1, and a number that fails to parse falls back to a plain name rather than an error.
Can I combine "allow the same item twice" with "remove winners"?
Yes, though the two pull in opposite directions. Allowing repeats lets the draw count exceed the list length by picking from the pool over and over, while removing winners shrinks the remaining pool so repeat winners get rarer. Pick whichever matches your scenario.
Can the draw count exceed the list length?
Not by default — the tool reports that the count cannot exceed the list length. If you really want more draws than candidates (to eyeball a distribution, say), enable "allow the same item twice".
How does deduplication work?
It matches names exactly and keeps the weight from the first occurrence, so "Alice,3" followed by another "Alice" merges into one entry with weight 3.
Is the draw fair, and is my list uploaded?
It is fair and nothing is uploaded. Randomness comes from the browser crypto.getRandomValues API, non-repeating draws use a Fisher–Yates shuffle, and the whole process runs locally — neither the list nor the history leaves the browser.
