List grouper

Split a line-based list into groups by number of parts or by group size — 8 lines into 3 parts gives 3/3/2 with the remainder up front, order preserved, optional blank-line separators and group labels.

What this tool does

  • Split a long task list or dataset across people so each part differs by at most one line.
  • Cut a list into fixed-size chunks, e.g. 20 lines per summary or 5 items per sample batch.
  • Add automatic #1, #2 headings to every group before pasting into Markdown or a ticket.

By group size the last group may be shorter — 5 lines in groups of 2 give 2/2/1.

Frequently asked questions

How does 8 lines into 3 parts work?

8÷3 is 2 with remainder 2, and the remainder goes to the first groups, so you get 3/3/2. The rule is fixed — extra lines always go to earlier groups, which keeps results reproducible.

What if I ask for more parts than lines?

It reports an error instead of producing empty groups. A group size of zero or less is rejected too, because every group must hold at least one line.

What are the blank lines in the output?

They are the separator between groups — two newlines by default, i.e. one blank line, which is easy to read. Change the separator or turn on group labels when you need a machine-readable marker.

Do group labels change the counts?

No. “Add group labels” only inserts a #1 / #2 line into the output; the line count in the stats still matches the items you pasted, labels are not counted as content.
