Import parameters

Enter amounts in the destination currency (USD / EUR / GBP / AUD). The customs value uses the CIF basis — goods plus shipping plus insurance. Duty and tax rates are default reference values (as of 2026-10) and can be edited below.

Rules and thresholds

US: HTS duty rates vary line by line, commonly 0–5%; Section 321 waives duty on shipments up to USD 800. State sales tax is set locally — estimate it with the US sales tax calculator.

What this tool does

  • Price a cross-border listing: enter goods value, international shipping and insurance to see duty plus import VAT/GST for the US, EU, UK and Australia before you quote a landed price.
  • See the tax-on-tax effect: import VAT is charged on the customs value plus duty, and this tool shows that difference explicitly instead of hiding it.
  • Decide whether to split a shipment: the de minimis lines differ a lot (US $800, EU €150, UK £135, Australia A$1000), so comparing them tells you whether one parcel or two is cheaper.
  • Explain a customs invoice to a customer by listing customs value, duty, tax base and VAT line by line.

Example

Input

Destination EU (Germany), goods value EUR 900, shipping EUR 20, insurance EUR 0, duty 4.7%, VAT 19%

Output

Customs value EUR 920.00, duty EUR 43.24, tax base EUR 963.24, VAT EUR 183.02, total landed cost EUR 1,146.26

VAT is charged on customs value plus duty, so 963.24 × 19% = 183.02. Below the EUR 150 duty threshold duty drops to zero, but import VAT is still due.

Frequently asked questions

Are duty and import VAT the same charge?

No. Duty comes from the classification (HS / HTS / TARIC code) and origin of the goods and is usually a few percent; import VAT (called GST in Australia) is the destination’s consumption tax applied to the customs value plus duty. Customs collects both, but they are different charges and import VAT is normally recoverable.

Why does the EUR 150 line matter so much in the EU?

B2C shipments up to EUR 150 are duty free but still owe import VAT, and sellers can collect that VAT at the point of sale through IOSS so it is not charged again on import. Above EUR 150 the shipment goes through the normal duty plus import VAT process.

Does the US really have an $800 exemption?

The Section 321 de minimis rule does waive duty on shipments up to USD 800 (and federal import taxes with it), but state sales tax is set locally and the rules have been changing. The $800 threshold and 3.5% rate here are default reference values (as of 2026-10) — check the current rules and your HTS classification.

Why is shipping and insurance included in the customs value?

Most customs authorities use the CIF basis — goods plus insurance plus freight — as the customs value. Leaving freight out understates duty and VAT, so the tool includes both and gives insurance its own input.

Can I file customs with this result?

No. This only estimates rates and thresholds. The real amount depends on classification, origin, trade agreements (preferential rates), how the entry is declared and customs valuation. For an actual entry, rely on your broker or the customs authority.
