Image metadata viewer
Inspect EXIF, GPS and shooting parameters locally: a from-scratch reader for JPEG segments, PNG chunks, WebP RIFF containers and EXIF IFDs — read-only, nothing uploaded.
Runs in your browserEvery computation happens in your browser — your data never leaves this device.
Choose an image
The file is parsed in browser memory only and never uploaded to a server.
JPEG / PNG / WebP / GIF / BMP / TIFF are supported — metadata shows up as soon as you pick a file.

What this tool does
- Check the shooting parameters before you trust a photo: camera model, aperture, shutter, ISO and lens tell you whether it came from a phone snapshot or a real camera.
- Audit privacy: platforms strip EXIF on re-upload, but an original file may still carry GPS coordinates — verify before you share it.
- Trace a processing pipeline: PNG tEXt / pHYs chunks and WebP VP8X canvas size plus ICC flags show which tool touched the image and whether a colour profile is embedded.
- Attribute assets: EXIF Make / Model / Software / DateTimeOriginal is the cheapest provenance trail you get.
Example
Input
An 8 × 8 JPEG whose APP1 segment carries EXIF: Make=TestCam, Model=UniKit X1, Orientation=1, ExposureTime=1/125, FNumber=2.8, GPS 39°54′26.5″N / 116°23′29″E
Output
Container: format JPEG, dimensions 8 × 8, byteOrder little-endian; IFD0: Make TestCam, Model UniKit X1, Orientation 1; ExifIFD: ExposureTime 0.008, FNumber 2.8; GPSDecimal: latitude 39.907361, longitude 116.391389
Exposure time is stored as the fraction 1/125 and shown as 0.008; GPS degrees/minutes/seconds are converted to decimal degrees so you can paste them straight into a map.
Frequently asked questions
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read into a byte array in the browser and parsed entirely on this page — there is not a single network request, and closing the tab discards everything. It works offline too.
Which formats are supported?
Six containers: JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and TIFF. JPEG uses segment walking (APP0/APP1/APP2/COM/SOF), PNG uses chunk walking (IHDR/tEXt/iTXt/pHYs/gAMA/tIME/eXIf) and WebP uses RIFF chunks (VP8/VP8L/VP8X/EXIF/ICCP/XMP). ISOBMFF-based formats such as HEIC and AVIF are out of scope.
Why do so many photos have no EXIF at all?
Three usual reasons: messaging and social apps re-compress images and drop metadata, screenshots and "save image as" never carry shooting info, and export tools can be told to strip it. EXIF is optional, so its absence does not mean the file is broken.
What are the decimal degrees shown for GPS?
EXIF stores latitude and longitude as degrees, minutes and seconds plus an N/S/E/W reference. The decimal form is degrees + minutes/60 + seconds/3600, negated for south and west, and it can be pasted directly into a map search box.
Does it modify my image or write EXIF back?
No. This tool is strictly read-only: it neither changes the file you picked nor produces a new image. The only output is the text on the page and the copyable summary. Use a dedicated cleaner if you want metadata removed.
