Hearing test
Interpret 9-band (125–8000 Hz) pure-tone thresholds: compute left and right PTA (mean of 500/1000/2000/4000 Hz), grade with the WHO scale, and run high-frequency loss and inter-aural asymmetry checks.

What this tool does
- Read an audiogram quickly: type in the thresholds and get the PTA and WHO grade automatically.
- High-frequency self-check: if you wear headphones for hours, see whether 4000–8000 Hz is more than 15 dB above your speech frequencies.
- Inter-aural comparison: a 10 dB or greater difference at any frequency is flagged as asymmetric, prompting a specialist visit.
- Follow-up records: repeat the measurement over time and compare the results side by side for a downward trend.

Frequently asked questions
How is PTA computed?
PTA (pure-tone average) is the arithmetic mean of the thresholds at 500, 1000, 2000 and 4000 Hz, the convention used by WHO grading and domestic hearing assessment. Left ear 10/10/15/20 dB averages to 55 ÷ 4 = 13.75 ≈ 13.8 dB.
What are the grading bands?
WHO: normal below 20 dB, mild 20–34, moderate 35–49, moderately severe 50–64, severe 65–79, profound 80–94 and complete hearing loss at 95 dB or above. The grade uses that ear's PTA; clinically the better ear is used for disability assessment.
How is the high-frequency check judged?
The mean of 4000/6000/8000 Hz minus the speech-frequency mean (the four PTA points). A gap of 15 dB or more suggests marked high-frequency loss, the most common early sign of noise-induced damage (often a V-shaped notch at 4000 Hz). The result prints the difference directly.
What if I only measured some frequencies?
That is fine. Missing points are skipped by default and both averages use only the measured points, with the ear's measured count shown. Turn off 'allow missing frequencies' to require all nine and get an error instead.
What is the input format?
One point per line as 'ear frequency threshold', separated by spaces or commas. The ear can be 左/右, L/R or left/right; the frequency must be one of 125, 250, 500, 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 6000, 8000; thresholds range from −10 to 120 dB HL.
Can it play pure tones in the browser?
This module only interprets thresholds and does not play audio. Pure-tone audiometry must be done in a soundproof booth with a calibrated audiometer by a professional; browser audio and consumer headphones are neither level-calibrated nor frequency-flat, so results cannot be used for diagnosis.
