Room length, width[, plank length, width]

Material result

Net planks, purchase quantity and waste-inclusive area.

Enter the room dimensions to calculate

Room area: 0 · Plank area: 0 · Net planks: 0 · Buy planks: 0 · Waste area: 0

What this tool does

  • Plan before renovating: measure the room, enter the plank size and get both the net count and the purchase quantity in one go.
  • Compare quotes on equal footing — some sellers price per plank, others per square metre, and this converts between them.
  • Judge the waste rate: change it from 5% to 8% and see how many extra planks a diagonal or herringbone lay needs.
  • Check a contractor's quote by feeding their plank count back into the formula to see whether the waste was padded.

Example

Input

4,3,1210,165

Output

推导:房间面积 12 ㎡;单块面积 = 1210/1000 × 165/1000 = 0.19965 ㎡;

Plank area = length(mm)/1000 × width(mm)/1000; net count = ⌈room area ÷ plank area⌉.

Frequently asked questions

How is the net plank count computed?

Net count = ⌈room area ÷ plank area⌉, rounded up because half a plank cannot be bought. For a 12 m² room with 1210 mm × 165 mm planks: plank area = 1.21 × 0.165 = 0.19965 m², and 12 ÷ 0.19965 = 60.1, which rounds up to 61.

Why does the purchase quantity differ from the net count?

Purchase = ⌈room area × (1 + waste) ÷ plank area⌉: the waste is added to the area first and only then converted to planks, matching how orders are actually placed. In the same example at 5% waste: 12 × 1.05 ÷ 0.19965 = 63.1, rounding up to 64 — three spare planks.

What waste rate should I use?

Straight lay is usually 5%; diagonal, herringbone or chevron patterns call for 8–10%; irregular rooms, many doorways or large pattern matching need more. The default is 5% and can be set anywhere from 0 to 50%.

How do I enter the plank size?

In millimetres, for example 1210 and 165. Leaving it blank uses the default 1210 mm × 165 mm, a common 1.2 m laminate plank. Note the unit is millimetres, not centimetres — do not enter 121.

What is the waste-inclusive area?

Waste-inclusive area = net planks × plank area × (1 + waste), i.e. the covered area if you buy the net count and then account for waste. It is larger than the room area and the difference is the waste.

Can I order straight from the result?

Use it as a reference, but skirting, door frames, raised platforms, laying direction and batch colour variation all matter. Order from the result and keep one or two spare planks to avoid a colour mismatch later.
