English word extractor

Extract English words from mixed text: apostrophes inside contractions (don't) are kept, hyphenated compounds can be treated as one word (well-known), with case-insensitive dedupe, a minimum length filter, and word plus unique counts.

What this tool does

  • Pull the English vocabulary out of mixed-language documents for glossary or terminology checks.
  • Measure the vocabulary size of an article: enable case-insensitive dedupe to see how many distinct words it uses.
  • Clean prose into a plain word list before keyword or SEO analysis.

Example

Input

Don't stop; it's a well-known idea. Café and naive.

Output

Don't
stop
it's
a
well
known
idea
Café
and
naive

Apostrophes stay inside a word (don't) while hyphens split by default (well-known → well, known); accented letters such as café count as letters too.

Frequently asked questions

Is don't split into don and t?

No, not by default — an apostrophe inside a word is part of the word. Only turning off “apostrophes inside words” splits it.

Does the hyphen in well-known split the word?

By default yes, giving well and known. Enable “treat hyphenated compounds as one word” to keep well-known intact.

Do accented words such as café count?

Yes. Matching is based on the Unicode Latin script, so é, ü and similar letters are letters.

Does U.S.A. become three words?

Yes — this tool treats the dot as punctuation, so U.S.A. becomes U, S and A. Use the English word segmenter if you want dotted abbreviations kept.

How much text can it handle?

Two million characters, after which it reports an error rather than freezing the main thread.
