- Price a listing properly: enter the sale price, shipping charged to the buyer and both your costs to see what is left after the FVF and fixed fee.
- Compare categories — the final value fee varies a lot (13.25% for most categories, 14.95% for books and media) — and switch tiers to see the difference in your payout.
- Judge promoted listings: put the ad rate into the promoted field and check whether the net profit is still positive.
- Work backwards from a target: enter the net profit you want and get the minimum price that delivers it.
Example
Input
Price $50.00, shipping charged to buyer $5.00, most-categories FVF 13.25% (cap $7,500), fixed fee $0.30, 1 listing this month with a 250-listing free allowance, product cost $20.00, your shipping $4.00, promoted rate 0%, target net profit $10.00
Output
Order total $55.00; FVF $7.29, promoted fee $0.00, per-order fixed fee $0.30, insertion fees $0.00, total platform fees $7.59; net proceeds $47.41, total cost $31.59, net profit $23.41, margin 42.56%; break-even price $23.01, price needed for the $10.00 target $34.54
The FVF applies to price plus the shipping the buyer pays, so inflating shipping also inflates the fee. Listings inside the monthly free allowance cost nothing.
Frequently asked questions
Is the FVF charged on the price or on the order total?
On the order total: the item price plus shipping and handling the buyer pays. A cheap item with expensive shipping therefore does not dodge the fee, which is exactly why the tool keeps the two amounts separate.
Where do 13.25% and the $7,500 cap come from?
Most categories carry a 13.25% final value fee capped at $7,500 per order; books, music and movies sit at 14.95%. These defaults were compiled in 2026-10 from the public eBay US fee pages, are not real time, and vary by store level and site — edit them to match your account.
Why are there two per-order fixed fees?
eBay charges a higher fixed fee (default $0.40) on orders totalling $10 or less and $0.30 above that. The tool picks the right band from price plus buyer-paid shipping, and both amounts stay editable.
When are insertion fees charged?
eBay grants a monthly free allowance (250 listings by default) and charges per listing beyond it ($0.35 by default). Enter your listing count and free allowance and the tool only bills the excess.
Can I use the solved price as-is?
It is the minimum price at which the profit target is still met. Because the FVF rounds to the cent and the fixed fee is banded, the tool takes the smallest feasible value from both the proportional and the capped branch — still worth adding 5–10% of headroom in practice.
