What this tool does
- Teach character recognition: split a sentence into single characters and show pinyin, initial/final and stroke count for copying practice.
- Catch polyphonic characters before a voice-over: the tool flags 重 in 重庆 as chóng, not zhòng.
- Verify pinyin output before wiring it into an IME, tokenizer or annotation feature.
- Expand a sentence into space-separated characters for counting, subtitle line breaking or making flashcards.
Example
Input
你好世界
Output
Pinyin and polyphonic readings come from a local dictionary; stroke counts cover common characters and say so when a character is missing.
Frequently asked questions
What exactly is being broken down?
This tool does per-character breakdown: it splits the sentence by Unicode character and reports pinyin (with tone), initial, final, stroke count, a structure hint and the full polyphonic reading list for each Chinese character, then reassembles the sentence in order. It is not a radical/component decomposition, and the result says so explicitly.
How reliable is the structure hint?
It is a heuristic based on a small radical table covering 氵/讠/钅 (left-right), 宀/艹/心 (top-bottom), 囗 (enclosure) and a set of single-body characters. Anything outside the table is labelled 'not covered', rather than guessed.
Where do the stroke counts come from?
From a local table of common characters covering a few dozen entries. Characters outside it report 0 with a 'not covered' marker, because inventing a number would be worse than saying nothing.
Are all polyphonic readings listed?
Yes. The detail line lists every reading of the character (for 重: chóng and zhòng), while the pinyin line shows the reading the dictionary selected for the sentence, so 重庆 reads chóng qìng.
What happens to punctuation and digits?
They are skipped for pinyin analysis but kept by default when the sentence is reassembled (the keep-punctuation option turns that off). The 'Han characters' stat counts Chinese characters only.
Is my text uploaded?
No. The pinyin dictionary ships with the repository and everything is parsed locally in the browser.
