Wood density and weight
Pick a species (pine 0.5, oak 0.75, fir 0.37, ebony 1.12 and 16 more) or adjust the air-dry density for moisture, then enter length, width and thickness to get volume and weight. Tabulated densities are air-dry approximations at about 12% moisture, within ±10%.

Density and weight
Air-dry densities are approximate values at about 12% moisture.

What this tool does
- Estimate the weight of a board or piece of furniture to check handling and shelf load.
- Work out the shipping weight from volume × density and avoid volumetric-weight surcharges.
- Compare species at the same size to size the frame and hardware.
Example
Input
2x0.2x0.05
Output
A pine batten of 1 × 0.2 × 0.02 m has a volume of 0.004 m³ and weighs 2 kg at the 0.5 g/cm³ air-dry density.
Frequently asked questions
What does air-dry density mean?
It is the density at about 12% moisture after natural seasoning (the GB/T 1933 measurement basis), in g/cm³. Green timber can exceed 60% moisture and is much heavier, while kiln-dried 6%–8% stock is lighter, so the table only applies to air-dry wood.
Is 0.5 accurate for pine?
It is a typical value for commercial pine. The same species varies by origin, age and heartwood/sapwood by up to ±10%, so treat it as an estimate. For real data, weigh and measure a regular sample.
How does moisture change the weight?
Each extra percentage point of moisture adds about 0.5% to the density (water replaces air), a linear approximation used here. Enter your measured moisture (8% kiln-dried, 60% green) and it adjusts; values outside 0–200% are rejected.
How do I enter the size?
As lengthxwidthxthickness in metres, e.g. 2x0.2x0.05 for 2 m × 20 cm × 5 cm. A single number means a cube; two numbers mean length × width with thickness equal to width.
Why only 20 species?
They span the practical range from balsa at 0.16 to ebony at 1.12. For anything else pick the closest species or apply your own density: weight (kg) = density × volume (cm³) ÷ 1000.
