Frequently asked questions
Why divide by DPI and multiply by 2.54?
DPI counts dots per inch, so pixels ÷ DPI gives inches, and one inch is exactly 2.54 cm by international definition. Hence cm = pixels ÷ DPI × 2.54.
Are DPI and PPI the same?
Not strictly: PPI describes the pixel density of an image, DPI the output resolution of a printer. People mix them in everyday speech; this tool uses the PPI sense — pixels divided by the target resolution.
How many pixels does a photo print need?
At 300 DPI a 6-inch print (10.2 × 15.2 cm) needs about 1200 × 1800 px, and a full A4 page (21 × 29.7 cm) about 2480 × 3508 px. Those are the usual minimums from print shops.
How large can a phone photo print?
At 300 DPI a 12 MP shot (4000 × 3000) reaches about 33.9 × 25.4 cm, and a 48 MP shot (8000 × 6000) about 67.7 × 50.8 cm. Posters viewed from a distance can drop to 150 DPI and double that.
Why show points?
