Stainless steel plate weight

Stainless steel plate weight from thickness (mm) × width (m) × length (m) × 7.93, with an editable density factor (7.98 for 316L), plus area and weight per square metre; non-numeric or non-positive input is rejected.

Weight result

Theoretical weight — invoicing usually goes by the scale.

What this tool does

  • Estimate weight before quoting: enter the thickness and cut size to get kilograms per sheet and sheets per tonne.
  • Cross-check a mill certificate or invoice by recomputing the weight with 7.93 or 7.98 g/cm³.
  • Plan logistics: multiply by the number of sheets to check truck capacity and lifting equipment.

Example

Input

1.22x2.44

Output

A 1 mm 304 sheet weighs 7.93 kg per m², so 1 mm × 1 m × 2 m is exactly 15.86 kg.

Frequently asked questions

Where does 7.93 come from?

It is the engineering density of austenitic stainless steel (304/304L), 7.93 g/cm³. A 1 mm thick, 1 m² plate is exactly 1000 cm³, which is 7.93 kg — so the formula collapses to thickness (mm) × width (m) × length (m) × 7.93.

What factor should I use for 316L or 201?

Use 7.98 for 316L, about 7.70 for 430 ferritic and about 7.93 for 201. Edit the density field; the tool does not guess the grade.

Why does the result differ from the weighed weight?

Because theoretical weight uses the nominal thickness, while the real thickness varies within the standard tolerance (hot-rolled plate can run several percent light), and cutting adds losses. Use it for quotes; invoicing usually goes by the scale.

Which units does the input use?

Metres for width and length, millimetres for thickness — the usual mill convention (1.22 × 2.44 m is a 4 × 8 ft sheet). Note the tool does not convert units, so divide millimetres by 1000 first.
