What this tool does
- Turn a net price into a tax-inclusive quote so the customer sees the final amount.
- Work backwards from a tax-inclusive invoice to recover the net revenue and the tax portion.
- Compare the same amount under Chinese 13%/9%/6% bands and the common EU standard rates when quoting across borders.
- Edit the rate table in place whenever your own applicable rate is not in the defaults.
Example
Input
Amount 100 yuan, direction “Net → gross”
Output
13% row: net 100.00, tax 13.00, gross 113.00; 9% row: tax 9.00, gross 109.00; 6% row: tax 6.00, gross 106.00
Switch the direction to “Gross → net” and enter 113: the 13% row recovers net 100.00 and tax 13.00.
Frequently asked questions
Why can’t I just multiply by the rate to go from gross to net?
VAT is charged on top of the net price, so net = gross ÷ (1 + rate) rather than gross × (1 − rate). For 113 gross at 13%, the net is 100 and the tax is 13; multiplying by 87% would give 98.31, which is wrong.
Are the rates in the table authoritative?
They are reference values: the main current Chinese bands plus the common EU standard rates. Which band applies to a specific product or service depends on local law and classification, so treat the table as a starting point and confirm with your tax authority.
Do the amounts suffer from floating point error?
No. Every amount is converted to integer cents, tax is rounded to the nearest cent, and in the reverse direction the tax is derived as gross − net, so net + tax = gross always holds exactly.
What is the 0% row for?
Exports and certain cross-border services are zero-rated or exempt, so the gross amount equals the net amount. Keeping the row shows that zero rating is not the same as not reporting, and you can overwrite it with any custom rate.
