How to use

  • Windows: save the .url file to your desktop (or any folder) and double-click it — it opens in the default browser as an “Internet shortcut”.
  • macOS: the .webloc file is a plist; double-click it to open in Safari. You can also drag a URL onto Finder to create one manually.
  • HTML redirect page: handy for static hosting as a short link or landing hop — it redirects on load with a custom title and message.
  • Bookmark file: Netscape Bookmark format, importable in Chrome / Edge / Firefox / Safari via “Import bookmarks”.

What this tool does

  • Put a frequently used link on the desktop: generate a Windows .url or a macOS .webloc that opens in the default browser on double-click.
  • Hand a non-technical colleague or relative a one-click file that opens an internal system or an online sheet.
  • Build a short link or landing hop: generate an HTML redirect page with a meta refresh and drop it on any static host.
  • Turn a set of URLs into an importable bookmark file in Netscape format, accepted by Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari.

Example

Input

URL: https://example.com/docs
Name: UniKit 文档
Format: .url (Windows)

Output

[InternetShortcut]
URL=https://example.com/docs
IconIndex=0

A Windows .url is INI-style with CRLF line endings (shown here as \r\n); the file is saved as UniKit 文档.url. Switching to .webloc produces plist XML, to “Bookmark” the Netscape format, and to “HTML redirect page” a full page with a meta refresh.

Frequently asked questions

The .url file does nothing when I double-click it on Windows. Why?

First check that the extension really is .url and not .url.txt — Notepad likes to append .txt when you save. The file also has to keep its CRLF line endings and the [InternetShortcut] header, so hand-editing it can stop Windows from recognising it.

Why is a macOS .webloc an XML file?

It is a plist whose payload is just a URL string, opened by Safari on double-click. Because it is a plain-text plist you can edit the URL inside it with any text editor instead of regenerating the file.

What is the difference between the redirect page and the bookmark file?

The HTML redirect page is a standalone web page that jumps immediately via meta refresh — ideal as a short link on static hosting. The bookmark file is an importable list that lands in the browser’s bookmarks and is never opened as a page.

What happens if I leave the name empty?

The file name falls back to the host name with any www. prefix removed, so https://www.example.com/docs becomes example.com.url, and bookmark entries use the same host as their label. Illegal filename characters \ / : * ? " < > | are replaced with hyphens.

Can it generate a QR code or shorten the URL?

No — this tool only produces shortcut files. For a scannable QR code, paste the same URL into this site’s QR code generator; a QR code carries the URL only and is unrelated to the shortcut file. All file content is generated locally and never uploaded.
